The Therapy at Home Handwriting in Practice Program focuses on reducing some of the cognitive and language demands involved in handwriting tasks, so that children can focus on developing letter formation skills, writing speed and writing endurance.

This is the second program in our developmental range for handwriting skills so if you’re not at the point where you’re ready for functional writing of sentences, you might want to take a look at the precursor program:

About the Handwriting in Practice Program

The Play Way’s Handwriting Workbook provides a range of novel and functional handwriting exercises that allow children to write from memory or personal experience, or to copy if this eases the cognitive and language demands often involved in writing tasks.

In reducing the focus on aspects such as spelling, sentence structure and generating ideas, children can focus on the core components of handwriting, such as letter forms, letter sizes, spaces between words and writing on the line.

The workbook offers activities such as writing a list of jokes, writing a shopping list, copying song lyrics and more.  The compendium, fully stocked with a range of writing tools, will provide further motivation for engaging in the workbook activities.

Within the activities, there are options to cater for a range of cognitive and language levels so that children can extend themselves further if they would like to do so.  For example, if the activity is to write a list of fun facts, children will have the option to copy these from a book or the Internet, write them from memory or make up their own and challenge family and friends to decide which is fact and which is fiction.

The program has been designed to be completed over a four-week period, with a range of weekly activities and reflection tasks.  There is also a weekly task for gathering data about writing speed and legibility so that improvement can be tracked over time.
